So when Iris Rourke stepped through the Safehouse door carrying a flat black envelope in one hand, the room reacted before she said a word.

Brenda looked up from the table.

Maeve nodded.

Brenda looked at the lantern.

Iris’s mouth twitched.

Mai’s expression sharpened.

“Tress & Lorne Hospitality Risk may be exploiting junior attendees or assistants through sponsor-suite pressure.”

The humor faded.

Ace was entirely Ace now behind the blonde hair.

“We remember.”

Brenda nodded.

“Amber and Maeve interrupted one return before it became worse.”

Marco looked at Ace and Mai.

“Clean?”

Mai nodded.

“Public exit. No escalation. No names from the affected guest.”

Lena’s expression remained calm, but her fingers tightened once around her cup.

“Good.”

Iris added two lines to the note.

“Multiple route-confidence contacts obtained. Jessie also identified a lower-tier privacy weakness.”

Brenda groaned.

“Do not put that in a report like I meant to.”

“You were useful.”

“I was tricked by competence.”

Ace leaned forward.

“That is how they got me too.”

Mai looked at her.

“No one tricked you into competence.”

“I was very small. It could have happened.”

Marco sipped coffee.

“Unproven.”

The table breathed again.

Iris looked at Brenda.

For one second, the table disappeared from her expression.

Then she looked back at Mai.

Ace watched her.

“Yes.”

Brenda kept both hands around her coffee.

Mai looked at Iris.

Iris nodded.

“Yes.”

Ace stretched, then looked at the white-and-gold dress with visible annoyance.

“I need to stop being blonde.”

Mai touched the edge of her red hair.

“I need to stop being a legal department demon.”

Brenda picked up one silver wing structure.

“I need to burn these.”

Lena took it from her.

“No.”

Iris laughed under her breath.

Brenda’s room carried the familiar clutter of a mind that could build a detonation rig from scraps and also lose a sock in plain sight. Tools followed a logic no one else understood. A folded jacket occupied the chair. Two half-disassembled devices waited on a shelf beside the bright scarf Iris had left there last week—one Brenda had absolutely not moved, because leaving it visible made the room warmer.

Brenda closed the door.

Then Iris exhaled.

Brenda nodded once.

“And the professional part?”

“Separated. As cleanly as anything can be in that kind of room.”

“Okay.”

Iris searched her face.

“It matters,” she said.

“Yeah,” Brenda said. “It does.”

She looked down at Iris’s hands.

They were steady.

A little tired.

No tremor.

No hiding.

Brenda reached out and touched Iris’s fingers.

Iris took her hand immediately.

“I do not like people who can place doors so neatly you start wondering whether walking through was your idea.”

“I know.”

“I do not like that she looked at you like she could read the parts of you people usually only get after earning scars.”

Iris went still.

Brenda winced.

“That sounded worse than I meant.”

“No,” Iris said. “It sounded accurate.”

Brenda swallowed.

“Did she?”

“Some.”

Brenda nodded.

That answer hurt less than a lie would have.

“Okay.”

Iris’s thumb moved over Brenda’s knuckles.

“But she did not get to keep them.”

Brenda looked up.

Iris held her gaze.

“She saw some things. She named some things well. She kissed me.”

Brenda’s breath caught, not with surprise exactly.

With the private impact of hearing the thing named.

The small stupid feeling had a shape now. Brenda let it exist without asking Iris to fix it.

“That I am very glad you came back.”

Iris’s expression changed.

This time Brenda touched her first.

A hand at Iris’s cheek, warm skin under fingers, no mask in the way now. Iris leaned into it, and that small movement nearly undid Brenda more than anything Sinner’s Night had tried.

“I am here,” Iris said.

Brenda’s fingers tightened gently at her cheek.

“I was there too.”

“I know.”

“I need both of those to be true.”

Brenda nodded.

“Yeah.”

She brushed her thumb along Iris’s cheek.

“Then we make room for both.”

Iris’s eyes shone a little.

Not tears.

Not quite.

Relief, tired and warm.

“You make that sound simple.”

“It is not.”

“No.”

“But it is ours.”

Iris closed her eyes for one second.

When she opened them, the last of the Saint had left the room.

Iris remained: Lieutenant Rourke, Captain Rourke’s daughter, the woman who had chosen the silver room and come home from it.

Brenda leaned forward and kissed her.

Not to erase Anneliese.

Not to reclaim.

Not to overwrite.

To welcome.

“Her.” Iris held her gaze. “I want to see what happens when it is not Sinner’s Night, not a silver room, not a first door.”

Brenda let that settle.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

Iris’s mouth trembled toward a smile.

“You are sure?”

“No.”

That surprised a laugh out of Iris.

Brenda smiled.

“I am not sure about anything involving hot maritime security confessors with German names and cheekbones sharp enough to cut port regulations.”

Iris laughed harder, and the sound finally broke something loose in the room.

Good.

Brenda kept going because humor was safer once truth had been named.

“But I am sure about you. I am sure you came back. I am sure you will tell me what is mine to know. I am sure I do not own the rest. And I am sure that if she gets weird, I will invent a device that makes every advisory board presentation play accordion music.”

Iris stared at her.

“You would not.”

“I absolutely would.”

“That would be a war crime against PowerPoint.”

“I have done worse for less.”

Iris laughed again, then leaned into Brenda fully.

Brenda wrapped both arms around her.

The silver-white jacket crinkled awkwardly.

Iris made a muffled sound against her shoulder.

“What?”

“Your wings are gone.”

“Yes.”

“But the jacket is still dramatic.”

“I hate this jacket.”

“I like it.”

Brenda sighed.

“Of course you do.”

“I liked Jessie.”

Brenda’s arms tightened.

“She does.”

Iris smiled against her shoulder.

“Through Petra Havel?”

“That would be an abuse of the advisory channel.”

“Good. We are learning boundaries.”

Iris lifted her head.

Her eyes were warmer now.

Less tired.

Still carrying the night, but no longer carrying it alone.

Brenda touched the edge of the Saint coat.

“Do you want out of this?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate enough to make both of them laugh.

“Good. I want out of this too.”

“You first?”

“Me first because if I stay in Jessie much longer, I will start saying useful things by accident.”

“You do that as Brenda too.”

“Do not spread lies.”

“They are documented.”

Brenda stepped back enough to begin unfastening the silver-white jacket. Iris helped without asking, fingers careful at the hidden clasps Lena had secured earlier. The jacket came loose. Brenda peeled it off and tossed it over the chair with more force than necessary.

Iris looked at it.

“You will regret that when Lena sees it.”

“I already regret many things.”

“The lantern?”

“I do not regret the lantern.”

“I knew it.”

“I regret being seen not regretting it.”

Iris smiled.

Then Brenda turned to the dark Saint coat.

“Your turn.”

Iris stood still while Brenda unfastened the front clasps.

The gesture was practical.

Mostly.

It still carried the softness of undoing armor after a night where every layer had been read by someone.

The coat opened.

Iris exhaled.

Brenda slid it from her shoulders and folded it with more care than she had given her own jacket.

“Why?”

“Because the contact mattered. The review matters. It might change things.”

“Yes.”

“But the first thing I wanted to tell you was that I came back with myself.”

Brenda’s throat tightened.

“You did.”

“You saw?”

“Yes.”

“Before I said anything?”

Brenda nodded.

“I saw you walk down.”

Iris looked down.

Then back up.

“I was afraid, for a moment, that if I looked too different, you would think—”

“No.”

Brenda said it immediately.

“No.”

Iris stopped.

Brenda took her hands again.

“I might think a lot of things. I might think she is too good at this. I might think the room was a trap disguised as good taste. I might think you looked way too pretty for my concentration. I might think I need to build better balcony sensors.”

Iris smiled then, small and helplessly warm.

“But I am not going to think you are less mine because you came back with more of yourself, not less.”

Iris’s eyes shone again.

Brenda swallowed.

“I mean—not mine like property. Mine like—”

“I know,” Iris said.

Brenda exhaled.

“Good. Because that sentence almost attacked me.”

Iris laughed under her breath.

Then kissed her.

This one was shorter.

Sweeter.

Still warm.

When Iris pulled back, she said, “Yours like home.”

Brenda’s heart did something deeply inconvenient.

“Yes.”

Iris touched her face.

“And I am not less yours because I wanted someone else’s attention tonight.”

“No.”

Brenda smiled crookedly.

“I am human. Ask me again tomorrow and I may still have a stupid feeling. But stupid feelings are not orders. We can talk them down with snacks.”

Iris laughed.

“That is very Safehouse.”

“It is advanced emotional engineering.”

“Is that what you call it?”

“I just invented it.”

“It shows.”

Brenda kissed her again, partly to stop the insult, mostly because she could.

This time Iris smiled into it.

That helped.

Afterward, they ended up sitting on the edge of the bed, shoulders touching, costume pieces scattered in degrees of dignity around the room. The night outside the small window had lost the worst of its rain. Somewhere in the Safehouse, Ace laughed at something, then Mai said something too low to hear, and Ace laughed again differently.

Home noises.

Not audience.

Just home.

Brenda leaned her head against Iris’s shoulder.

“So,” she said.

Iris tilted her head.

“So?”

“You got your contact.”

“I did.”

“And a second meeting.”

“Yes.”

“And a professional review.”

“Yes.”

“And kissed the hot German maritime confessor.”

Iris made a strangled sound.

Brenda smiled into her shoulder.

“I am processing.”

“I see.”

“I am being very mature.”

“Extremely.”

“And I did guardian angel work without hitting anyone.”

“That remains impressive.”

“I should get a medal.”

“You will get sleep.”

“Worse medal.”

Iris rested her cheek against Brenda’s hair.

“Brenda.”

“Mm?”

“Thank you for not making me smaller when I came back.”

The sentence went through Brenda cleanly.

She lifted her head.

Iris looked at her with no mask, no Saint, no officer defense in front of the words.

Brenda wanted to answer with a joke.

Could not.

So she gave the truth.

“You came back bigger,” Brenda said. “A little. Like something opened and did not eat you.”

Iris’s lips parted, and for one second she looked very young, very tired, and very loved.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.”

Brenda touched her cheek again.

“Good.”

Iris closed her eyes.

This time, when Brenda kissed her, there was no Sinner’s Night in it at all.

Only Safehouse.

Only return.

Much later, when they finally turned off the light, the silver jacket lay across the chair, the Saint coat folded beside it, and the lantern sat dark on the shelf.

Brenda had turned it off herself.

No more visible.

No more close.

In the dark, Iris found her hand.

Brenda squeezed once.

No one asked for a report.

No one needed one.

The night had ended where it was supposed to.
