## Chapter 1 — Normal Night

Mai finished cleaning the disruptor before Ace finished pretending not to watch her.

Across from her, Ace sat sideways on the narrow top edge of the couch’s backrest—not on the couch itself—with one bare foot resting against the cushion and the other hanging toward the floor. Her compact frame balanced there with the casual certainty of someone who considered furniture suggestions rather than rules. Her black hair, cut unevenly enough to retain the sharp, practical look Mai knew well, carried a faint violet sheen where the room light touched it.

Ace had been silent for nearly three minutes.

Mai did not look up.

“You can ask.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“You have been staring at the same component since I removed it.”

“I’m supervising.”

“You do not know what it does.”

Ace’s violet eyes moved from the component to Mai.

“It belongs inside the gun.”

At the other end of the couch, Shammy stretched one long leg beneath the table and shifted the angle of her tablet. “She knows where it goes,” Shammy said.

Ace turned her head toward Shammy.

“It sounded supportive.”

Mai placed the cleaned component beside the others.

The Safehouse had settled around them hours ago.

“You are both tired.”

“There she is.”

The door opened to low amber lighting, familiar shadows, and a bed large enough for three people who slept with radically different interpretations of personal space.

Shammy reached it first.

She sat on the edge and bent to remove the soft indoor shoes she had apparently forgotten she was still wearing. Even seated, she remained almost level with Ace standing beside her.

Ace tipped her head farther back and let the observation remain unspoken.

Shammy took one corner of the blanket between two fingers.

The fabric rose from the bed.

Shammy placed the blanket back down evenly.

“Resolved.”

Ace sat up.

“Same thing.”

Mai switched off the main bedroom lights.

The amber strip near the floor remained.

By the time she crossed the room, Shammy had settled on one side of the bed and Ace had moved toward the middle. Not because anyone had assigned positions. Their sleeping arrangement changed often enough to resist diagrams, but tonight the shape formed naturally.

Mai lay down beside Ace.

Ace shifted immediately into contact, shoulder against Mai’s ribs, one knee resting over Mai’s thigh. Her touch carried no question. It did not need one.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

The Safehouse continued its ordinary night sounds.

The distant cycling of the laundry unit.

Ace’s breathing slowed first.

“This one did not.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Too many structures failed in too little space. The foundation repeated. The endings contradicted it. And the people around the rune-user altered the pressure without writing the runes themselves.”

Shammy’s attention sharpened.

“You could distinguish my pressure from Mai’s work.”

“I could distinguish that the rune field did not carry the entire burden.”

Mai kissed her—not as reassurance offered to Ace, and not as gratitude for being handled carefully. She kissed her because the desire to do so stayed hers. Ace answered gently, one hand braced beside Mai rather than against the injured body.

Shammy waited without distance. Mai turned toward her next and drew her down by the front of her shirt. Shammy’s kiss was warm and unhurried, ending only when Mai’s ribs limited the breath beneath it.

“Enough?” Shammy asked.

“For now.”

The answer held neither apology nor promise.

Shammy lay down on Mai’s uninjured side without crowding her, close enough that warmth arrived immediately.

Ace climbed onto the other side, small body close, violet eyes watchful, uneven black hair falling across the pillow.

She placed one hand against Mai’s ribs without pressure, offering only contact.

Mai took in the two bodies arranged around her. The third dream had ended with an invitation.

The duel had ended with surrender.

Mai reached first again. Her hand found Ace’s wrist, then Shammy’s fingers at her hip, joining the contacts without needing either woman to begin them for her.

Ace’s thumb moved once across the soft fabric near her ribs. Shammy’s fingers closed carefully around Mai’s.

Mai closed her eyes.

The room remained.

Shammy remained.

Nothing receded from meaning.

No structure narrowed the world.

Mai opened her eyes once more.

Ace was watching her.

“Sleep,” Ace said.

Mai looked toward Shammy.

Shammy’s charged blue eyes were already half closed.

“You will wake me if—”

“Yes,” Shammy said.

“If her breathing—”

“Yes.”

“If the ankle—”

“Yes.”

Ace looked at Mai.

“She has it.”

Mai breathed in carefully.

Then out.

The Safehouse ventilation moved softly through the room.

Farther away, Kiro’s voice rose briefly as she argued with Brenda about where the sealed boot could be stored.

Brenda answered sharply enough that one word carried through the wall.

“No.”

Kiro replied with something too low to hear.

The ordinary noise faded.

Mai let the mattress hold her.

The first night had brought the cliff.
