Chapter 3 — Foundation Check They didn’t announce themselves. They didn’t have to. Seras felt it first. Not the presence. The pattern. Clean. Structured. Artificially isolated from everything around it. “They’re here.” Ace didn’t turn. “Yeah.” Mai’s gaze shifted— not to the street— to the space above it. “Observation layer.” Shammy frowned. “They’re not coming in.” Seras’ lips curved. “Of course they’re not.” A beat. “They don’t trust this space.” Ace: “They don’t trust anything right now.” That was closer to the truth. The distortion formed slowly. Not a portal. Not a tear. A window. Perfectly flat. Perfectly wrong. A slice of somewhere else— inserted into this place without permission. Figures stood behind it. Not fully visible. Not fully present. But enough. Uniform. Structure. Authority. Foundation. No insignia. No identifiers. None needed. Because the tone was immediate. “Report.” No greeting. No acknowledgment. Just— control. Ace didn’t move. Didn’t step forward. “Handled.” A pause. “Containment restored.” Silence from the other side. Longer than necessary. Processing. Verifying. Distrusting. “Define ‘restored.’” Mai answered. “Biological production halted.” A beat. “Residual population stabilized under external control.” Another pause. Heavier this time. “External.” That word carried weight. Seras stepped forward. Just enough. Not into the window. Into their awareness. “Yes.” Silence. Sharp. The figures behind the distortion shifted. Subtle. But enough to signal— unease. “Identify.” Seras didn’t hesitate. “You already know who I am.” Another pause. Then— “…confirmed.” A slight shift in tone. Still controlled. But no longer dismissive. “Explain your role in containment.” Seras’ gaze didn’t waver. “I replaced the failing control structure.” Clean. Direct. “I removed unstable variables.” A beat. “And I imposed operational limits.” Silence. Because that— wasn’t what they had asked for. But it was exactly what they got. “You were not authorized to establish autonomous control.” There it was. The line. Ace stepped forward. “They authorized her.” A beat. “You did.” The distortion flickered— just slightly. “Authorization was conditional.” Mai: “Conditions are met.” Immediate. Precise. “Veil intact.” A pause. “Spread halted.” Another. “System stable.” Silence again. Longer now. Because they couldn’t argue the data. Only the implications. “Define ‘stable.’” Seras answered this time. “Contained within defined parameters.” A beat. “Non-expanding.” Another. “Non-reproductive.” Her voice didn’t change. “Non-threatening unless provoked.” That last part— hung. “Unless.” Ace: “Don’t.” Too late. “Clarify ‘provoked.’” Seras: “Interference with the control structure.” A pause. “Including removal attempts.” There it was. The real conflict. The figures behind the distortion shifted again. More visibly this time. “You are stating that containment is dependent on your continued control.” Seras: “Yes.” No hesitation. “And that removal of that control results in—” Seras cut in. “Collapse.” A beat. “And uncontrolled regrowth.” Silence. Because now— they understood the cost. Ace folded her arms. “You wanted it fixed.” A beat. “It’s fixed.” The response came slower this time. Measured. “This constitutes a permanent anomaly.” Mai: “It already was.” Immediate. “Now it’s a managed one.” Another pause. Then— “Unacceptable.” That word landed. Hard. Seras stepped closer. Not aggressive. But absolute. “Incorrect.” Silence. “You are no longer in a position to define acceptable outcomes.” That shifted the room. Completely. Ace didn’t interrupt. Mai didn’t correct. Shammy didn’t move. Because— she was right. The distortion flickered again. Not unstable. Strained. “We can intervene.” Seras: “You can try.” A beat. “And you will fail.” That wasn’t a threat. That was a calculation. Silence. Long. Heavy. Then— the tone changed. Not softer. Worse. “Then we redefine the engagement.” There it was. The pivot. Ace tilted her head slightly. “Meaning.” “You maintain control.” A pause. “Under observation.” Another. “With intervention protocols authorized if parameters shift.” Seras considered it. Not emotionally. Structurally. “Accepted.” Immediate. No negotiation. Because she had already won. The distortion began to collapse. Not abruptly. Cleanly. “We will be watching.” Seras: “I know.” The window vanished. And just like that— they were gone. The street remained. The field held. The system— stable. Ace exhaled. “That went about as well as it could.” Mai: “They’ll try something later.” Shammy: “Yeah.” A beat. “They always do.” Seras turned. Looked at the controlled population. Then back at them. “Then we’ll be here.” Because this— wasn’t over. It had just been defined. [END OF ACT V — Chapter 3] Seuraava: → ACT VI — AFTERMATH (hiljaisempi, mutta tärkeä — mitä Triadille jäi tästä, erityisesti Shammylle) Nyt mennään siihen: mitä tämä maksoi oikeasti Sanot vaan 😄 Hyvä. Nyt ei meteliä. Nyt katsotaan mitä jäi jäljelle.
