Chapter 5 — The Price
The pressure didn’t spike.
It tightened.
Like a system locking into place.
Seras didn’t move.
Didn’t withdraw.
She pushed further.
The connection deepened.
And something—
far below—
answered.
Not blindly.
Not instinctively.
Deliberately.
The pull shifted direction.
Not just upward.
Outward.
Into them.
Mai felt it first.
Her breath caught—
just slightly.
Not from fear.
From interference.
“It’s rewriting the channel.”
Ace turned.
“Break it.”
Mai didn’t move.
Didn’t disengage.
“If I break it now—”
A beat.
“It fragments the signal.”
Seras finished it.
Without looking.
“And we lose containment.”
Mai:
“Yes.”
Shammy’s stance tightened.
The air around them compressed hard—
hard enough now that it started to push back against them.
Reality resisting correction.
“I can’t hold both.”
That was new.
Ace looked at her.
“Pick one.”
Shammy didn’t answer.
Because she couldn’t.
Seras spoke instead.
“Hold the structure.”
Shammy’s eyes flicked to her.
“Then it gets through.”
Seras:
“Yes.”
Ace:
“Not happening.”
Seras’ voice sharpened.
“You don’t get both.”
Silence.
That was the truth of it.
Mai’s hands moved.
Small.
Precise.
Not to break the connection.
To redirect it.
“If it’s coming through—”
A breath.
“We choose where.”
Ace’s eyes narrowed.
“Meaning.”
Mai didn’t look at her.
“Meaning we don’t let it spread.”
A beat.
“We contain it internally.”
That landed.
Hard.
Ace:
“No.”
Seras didn’t interrupt.
Didn’t need to.
Mai continued.
“It’s already reaching for pathways.”
A pause.
“If we don’t define one—”
Shammy finished it.
“It makes its own.”
Silence.
There it was.
The cost.
Not abstract.
Not later.
Now.
Ace looked between them.
Seras.
Mai.
Shammy.
Fast.
Sharp.
“Who.”
No one answered immediately.
Because the answer mattered.
And it wasn’t random.
Seras was already engaged.
Mai was managing the structure.
Which left—
Shammy.
She didn’t wait for it to be said.
Of course she didn’t.
She stepped forward.
Into the center.
Into the pressure.
“I can hold it.”
Her voice was steady.
But thinner now.
More strained.
Ace moved immediately.
“No.”
Shammy shook her head.
“If I anchor it—”
A breath.
“It stays localized.”
Mai:
“You won’t be able to fully filter it.”
Shammy:
“I don’t need to.”
Seras’ gaze fixed on her.
“You will carry the imprint.”
That was the real cost.
Not pain.
Not damage.
Change.
Permanent.
Shammy met her gaze.
No hesitation.
“I already do.”
That—
that hit differently.
Seras held her eyes for a fraction longer.
Then—
“Then hold.”
The word landed like a lock.
Shammy stepped into position.
Centered.
Her hands didn’t move.
She didn’t raise them.
Didn’t gesture.
She just—
opened.
The pressure shifted instantly.
Not gone.
Redirected.
Into her.
Her body didn’t react at first.
No visible strain.
Then—
her shoulders tightened.
Her breath hitched.
Just once.
But enough.
Ace saw it.
“Shammy—”
She didn’t answer.
Her eyes were no longer focused on the room.
They were—
elsewhere.
Inside the system.
The connection surged.
Hard.
Seras didn’t pull back.
Didn’t break contact.
She drove it deeper.
“Now.”
Mai moved.
Her hands cutting precise, invisible lines through the space.
Not blocking.
Shaping.
Constraining the flow.
“Channel defined.”
The pressure stabilized—
but not evenly.
It held.
But it held through Shammy.
The cost was visible now.
Her posture locked.
Too rigid.
Too still.
Like if she moved—
everything would break.
Ace stepped closer.
Didn’t touch her.
Didn’t interrupt.
But stayed—
right there.
“Stay with us.”
Shammy’s lips moved.
Barely.
“I am.”
A beat.
“Mostly.”
That word—
wrong.
Dangerous.
Seras felt it too.
The shift.
The imprint forming.
The system learning.
Through her.
She pulled.
Harder.
Not away.
Through.
Forcing the connection to stabilize—
on her terms.
The response from below—
violent.
A surge upward—
through Shammy—
into the structure—
into everything.
Mai held it.
Barely.
“This is the limit.”
Seras:
“No.”
A step deeper.
“This is where it breaks.”
And then—
it did.
Not with sound.
Not with light.
But with a snap in structure.
The connection—
shifted.
From resistance—
to compliance.
The pressure dropped.
Not gone.
Controlled.
Shammy staggered.
This time—
more than a step.
Ace caught her.
Immediate.
No hesitation.
“Easy—”
Shammy’s eyes snapped back into focus.
But something—
something wasn’t the same.
Not obvious.
Not yet.
But there.
Seras withdrew her hand.
Slowly.
The connection remained.
But it was no longer fighting.
It was—
listening.
Seras exhaled.
“Good.”
Mai lowered her hands.
The structure held.
For now.
Ace kept her grip on Shammy.
“You good?”
A pause.
Too long.
Then—
“Yeah.”
But it wasn’t clean.
Nothing was.
Seras looked at her.
Carefully.
“You’re not the same.”
Shammy met her gaze.
And for a brief—
very brief—
moment—
something else looked back.
Then it was gone.
“No.”
A breath.
“I’m not.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Final.
The cost had been paid.
And the operation—
could continue.

→ ACT IV — THE ROOT (täysi laskeutuminen + Megamyceten ydin)
Nyt peli muuttuu taas — tämä ei ole enää pinta.
Sanot vaan 😄
Hyvä. Nyt ollaan siellä missä pitääkin.
Ei jarruja.
