Chapter 2 — First Engagement
The first impact never landed.
The creature moved fast.
Too fast for something that had only just formed.
Muscle still aligning. Structure incomplete.
And still—
it closed the distance in a blink.
Ace didn’t step back.
Didn’t dodge wide.
Didn’t overreact.
She moved through it.
A blur of motion—tight, efficient—her body shifting just enough for the strike to miss by a margin that shouldn’t have existed.
Her hand came up.
Not to block.
To redirect.
Contact.
The creature’s momentum twisted sideways.
Not broken.
Not stopped.
Just—
misaligned.
And in that single fraction of imbalance—
Steel flashed.
The cut was clean.
Too clean.
The creature didn’t fall apart immediately.
That was the problem.
It kept moving.
Half a step.
Two.
Then—
its structure failed.
It collapsed inward.
Not like flesh.
More like something that had never fully decided what it was.
Mai was already moving.
No wasted motion.
No hesitation.
Her hand lifted.
A pulse—barely visible—rippled outward.
Not force.
Not energy in the conventional sense.
Correction.
The second wave hit the boundary of that pulse—
and broke.
Not physically.
Structurally.
Their movement stuttered.
Not slowed.
Not stopped.
Interrupted.
“They’re compensating.”
Mai’s voice was steady.
Analytical.
“Adaptation latency under two seconds.”
Ace:
“Then don’t give them two.”
Shammy stepped forward.
Not into the fight.
Into the space between movements.
The air tightened.
More than before.
The distortion—the subtle slipping of distance and timing—
compressed.
Reality didn’t fix itself.
But it stopped getting worse.
“Holding it.”
Her voice was quieter now.
Focused.
“For now.”
That was enough.
Another creature lunged.
Then another.
Then—
all of them.
Not chaotic.
Not animalistic.
Coordinated.
Seras saw it immediately.
“They’re learning from each other.”
Ace didn’t answer.
Didn’t need to.
She moved again.
Faster this time.
No testing.
No adjustment.
Commitment.
Two strikes.
Three.
Limbs severed.
Movement disrupted.
But again—
they didn’t die cleanly.
They persisted.
Fragments twitching.
Reforming.
Trying to reassemble structure from incomplete data.
Mai adjusted.
Instantly.
“Target the core.”
Ace:
“Where.”
Mai’s eyes flicked across the field.
Tracking.
Calculating.
“Center mass isn’t stable.”
A beat.
“Neural clusters are distributed.”
Shammy:
“Not fully.”
They both turned—
just slightly.
Shammy’s gaze wasn’t on the creatures.
It was—
through them.
“There’s a pattern.”
A breath.
“They’re anchoring to something.”
Seras moved.
Finally.
Not fast.
Not rushed.
Just—
decisive.
She stepped past Ace.
Past Mai.
Into the front line.
The next creature lunged.
She didn’t evade.
Didn’t counter.
She caught it.
One hand.
Mid-motion.
The force should have carried through.
Should have broken bone.
Should have mattered.
It didn’t.
Her grip tightened.
And everything—
stopped.
The creature struggled.
Violently.
Instinctively.
Then—
less.
Then—
not at all.
Seras leaned in.
Close.
Too close.
Her eyes locked with its.
And something shifted.
Not visible.
Not measurable.
But absolute.
The creature froze.
Not physically restrained.
Not injured.
Commanded.
Silence spread outward from that point.
The others faltered.
Just for a moment.
But it was enough.
Seras spoke.
Quiet.
Measured.
“You don’t belong here.”
The creature’s body reacted.
Subtly.
Internally.
Conflict.
Then—
collapse.
Not destruction.
Submission.
It dropped.
Lifeless.
Not dead.
Empty.
Seras released it.
Let it fall.
“There.”
Mai’s eyes sharpened.
“You disrupted the control link.”
Seras didn’t look at her.
“They’re not independent.”
A beat.
“They’re extensions.”
Shammy:
“Of the root.”
Seras nodded once.
“Yes.”
Ace exhaled.
Short.
Focused.
“Then we cut the connection.”
Seras turned.
Finally looking at all three of them at once.
“No.”
That stopped everything.
For a fraction.
Ace:
“Explain.”
Seras’ gaze was steady.
Cold.
Certain.
“If you sever the connection—”
A beat.
“they destabilize.”
Mai:
“That’s the point.”
Seras:
“No.”
A step forward.
“They disperse.”
Silence.
That landed.
Shammy’s expression shifted.
“Into the system.”
Seras:
“Yes.”
Ace’s jaw tightened.
“So what.”
Seras’ answer came immediately.
“So you lose containment permanently.”
That reframed everything.
Mai adjusted first.
“Then we isolate the root before severing.”
Seras:
“You don’t isolate this.”
A beat.
“You dominate it.”
The word hung there.
Heavy.
Final.
The remaining creatures hesitated.
Not attacking.
Not retreating.
Waiting.
For input.
Seras stepped forward again.
“And I need more of them.”
Ace glanced at her.
“You just said not to kill them all.”
Seras’ lips curved.
Just slightly.
“I said don’t waste them.”
A pause.
“Now let them come.”
The creatures twitched.
Then—
as if a silent command had been issued—
they attacked again.
And this time—
Seras didn’t just meet them.
She took control of the field.
