Chapter 1 — Entry Zone
They didn’t use a vehicle.
That was the first deviation.
No convoy.
No helicopter.
No insertion protocol.
Nothing that could be tracked.
Nothing that could be followed.
The transition happened in layers.
One moment—
city.
Noise. Light. Motion.
The next—
less.
Not gone.
But reduced.
As if something had reached into reality and turned the volume down without touching anything else.
Seras noticed immediately.
Of course she did.
“You’re already containing the perimeter.”
Ace walked ahead.
“As much as we can.”
A beat.
“It’s bleeding through.”
The street ahead stretched longer than it should have.
Not visually.
Structurally.
Distance behaved incorrectly.
Footsteps didn’t land where they were expected to.
Time lagged—
just slightly—
behind movement.
Shammy moved closer to the center of the group.
Not consciously.
Instinctively.
The air around her tightened.
Stabilized.
Not enough to fix it.
But enough to keep it from slipping further.
“It’s worse than before.”
Her voice was low.
Almost to herself.
Mai answered.
“Acceleration increased within the last six hours.”
Seras glanced at her.
“You’re monitoring in real time.”
Mai:
“We’re trying.”
A beat.
“The data doesn’t stay consistent.”
That tracked.
Perfectly.
The buildings changed.
Gradually.
Not collapsing.
Not destroyed.
But—
wrong.
Angles slightly off.
Surfaces absorbing more light than they should.
Windows that reflected things that weren’t there.
Seras slowed.
Just a fraction.
“This is already beyond biological.”
Ace didn’t argue.
“Started that way.”
A pause.
“Didn’t stay that way.”
They crossed an intersection.
No traffic.
No people.
No sound.
That was the second deviation.
Seras stopped.
This time—
fully.
“Where are they.”
Ace didn’t turn.
“Gone.”
Seras’ eyes narrowed.
“Evacuated.”
Mai:
“No.”
A beat.
“Absorbed.”
Silence.
Seras looked around.
Really looked now.
Not at the surfaces.
At the absence.
“How many.”
Ace:
“Doesn’t matter.”
Seras:
“It always matters.”
Ace turned this time.
Just enough.
“Too many.”
That was enough.
They moved again.
Deeper.
The air changed next.
It thickened.
Not physically.
But perceptually.
Breathing felt—
delayed.
Like the body had to wait for permission.
Shammy exhaled slowly.
The space around them tightened again.
Stronger this time.
“Don’t let it set the pace.”
Seras’ gaze flicked to her.
“It’s already trying.”
The ground shifted.
Subtly.
Barely visible.
But Seras felt it.
“Growth vector is below us.”
Mai nodded.
“Confirmed.”
Ace didn’t slow.
“Then we’re close.”
The street ended.
Not at a wall.
Not at a barrier.
It simply—
stopped.
Beyond it—
there was no continuation.
No road.
No buildings.
Just a depression in space.
Like something had been removed.
Or consumed.
And at the center—
Movement.
Not fast.
Not aggressive.
Organic.
Seras stepped forward.
Just enough to see clearly.
What had once been ground—
was now layered tissue.
Not flesh.
Not entirely.
Fibrous structures intertwined with something fungal.
Veins.
Roots.
Growth spiraling outward and downward at the same time.
Pulsing.
Alive.
“There it is.”
No one corrected her.
Because it was.
The edge of the system.
A low sound moved through it.
Not a growl.
Not a voice.
Something in between.
Shammy’s posture shifted.
Immediate.
“Contact.”
The surface moved.
Not randomly.
Deliberately.
Shapes emerged.
Pulling themselves free from the root structure.
Not climbing.
Not rising.
Being—
formed.
Seras’ eyes narrowed.
“So that’s how.”
The first one stepped fully into view.
It was wrong.
Not because it was monstrous.
But because it was incomplete.
Limbs slightly too long.
Joints not fully aligned.
Muscle forming even as it moved.
Eyes—
not empty.
Not wild.
Watching.
Learning.
More followed.
Three.
Five.
Seven.
Not a pack.
A wave.
Ace stepped forward.
No hesitation.
“Stay tight.”
Mai moved to her left.
Precise.
Already calculating angles.
Shammy—
center.
Holding the space together.
Seras didn’t move immediately.
She watched.
Studied.
Then—
slowly—
stepped forward.
Into their line.
“Don’t kill all of them.”
Ace didn’t look at her.
“Not planning to.”
Seras’ voice dropped.
“Good.”
A beat.
“I need them to understand what’s happening.”
The first creature lunged.
Too fast for something that unfinished.
Ace moved.
The world snapped back into motion.
And the operation—
finally—
began.
