Chapter 3 — The Deal Silence held for a moment longer than necessary. Not hesitation. Calibration. Seras stood at the center now. Not symbolically. Physically. The triangle had shifted. Not broken. But— reweighted. “You’re right.” Her voice was calm. Measured. No theatrics. “I can decide what survives this.” A beat. Her gaze moved—one by one. Ace. Mai. Shammy. “So let’s be precise about what you’re asking.” Ace didn’t answer immediately. Didn’t step in. Didn’t soften it. “We want it stopped.” Simple. Too simple. Seras’ eyes flicked to her. “No.” Not harsh. Just— correcting. “You want it contained.” A pause. “Stabilized.” Another. “Quiet.” Mai spoke this time. “We want the Veil intact.” That was the real sentence. Everything else was noise. Seras inclined her head slightly. Acknowledgment. “Of course you do.” She turned. Just enough to look at the model again. The root. The spread. The inevitability. “And you want this done without escalation.” A faint shift. “Without attention.” Another. “Without consequences.” Ace: “Not without consequences.” Seras glanced back. Interest. “Clarify.” Ace didn’t blink. “Without visible consequences.” A beat. “We don’t care what it costs under the surface.” That— that was honest. Seras studied her. Longer this time. “No.” The word came softly. Ace didn’t react. Seras continued. “You should care.” A step. Slow. Deliberate. “Because whatever I do to solve this…” Her eyes sharpened. “…will not stay contained to this room.” Mai answered. Flat. Controlled. “We are aware.” Seras turned fully to her now. “No.” A slight tilt of the head. “You understand the problem.” A beat. “You do not yet understand the solution.” That landed. Harder than anything so far. Shammy shifted. Subtle. But the air moved with her. “Then explain it.” Seras looked at her. Really looked. For a fraction longer than the others. Then— “Control requires pressure.” A pause. “Pressure requires dominance.” Another. “And dominance requires… removal.” The word didn’t echo. It didn’t need to. Ace spoke. “How much.” There it was. Finally. Seras’ answer came without delay. “Enough.” Ace’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Define it.” Seras’ expression didn’t change. “The current population is unstable.” A step closer. “Artificially generated.” Another. “Non-compliant with any existing ecological balance.” Her gaze locked with Ace’s. “So I will remove it.” Silence. Sharp. Clean. Mai cut in. Exactly where expected. “No excess.” Seras’ eyes flicked to her. A flicker. Not irritation. Recognition. “Define excess.” Mai didn’t hesitate. “You do not expand beyond the necessary threshold.” A beat. “You do not convert this into a population shift.” Another. “And you do not destabilize existing human structures.” Seras listened. Fully. No interruption. Then— a small, almost imperceptible smile. “You’re asking me to operate surgically.” Mai: “Yes.” Seras: “In a system that is already failing.” Mai: “Yes.” A longer pause. Then— Seras laughed. Soft. Once. No humor. “Interesting.” She stepped back. Not retreat. Reposition. “And what do I receive in return.” There it was. The real negotiation. Ace answered first. “Freedom of operation.” Seras tilted her head. “You’re offering me something you don’t own.” Ace: “We control the space.” A beat. “For now.” Seras’ gaze sharpened. “And the Foundation.” Mai answered this time. “They’ve authorized it.” Seras’ eyes narrowed. “Authorized… what.” Ace didn’t dress it up. “You.” Silence. Heavy. Meaningful. Seras absorbed that. Slowly. Carefully. “They’re desperate.” Shammy: “Yes.” Seras exhaled. Long. Measured. “And what happens when I succeed.” Ace: “You walk.” Seras’ gaze flicked between them. “That’s it.” Mai added the line that mattered. “Unless you don’t.” There. Seras looked at her. “Clarify.” Mai’s voice didn’t change. “If your population expands beyond control parameters…” A beat. “We intervene.” Seras held her gaze. Unblinking. “You believe you can.” Mai: “We believe we have to.” Silence. Again. But this time— different. Not tension. Not uncertainty. Mutual acknowledgment. Seras nodded once. “Good.” A beat. “Then we understand each other.” She stepped forward. Into the center again. Fully claiming it now. “I take control of the biological field.” Her voice sharpened. Not louder. Just— final. “I eliminate the unstable population.” A pause. “I locate and neutralize the source.” Another. “And I do it my way.” Ace: “Yeah.” Mai: “Within bounds.” Seras’ eyes flicked once more between them. “Within reason.” Shammy: “That’s the same thing.” Seras almost smiled again. Almost. “We’ll see.” A final pause. No one spoke. Because there was nothing left to negotiate. Then— Seras extended her hand. Not a gesture of trust. Not quite. A seal. Ace looked at it. Then at her. And took it. No warmth. No theatrics. Just— contact. And with it— the deal locked. Something in the room shifted. Subtly. But permanently. Because from this point forward— this was no longer containment. This was execution under agreement.
